Titanic GALLERY - The
ExpeditionsSecuring a lift bag

Large heavy objects are
lifted from the wreck site by the use of huge "lift bags." The bags are filled
with diesel fuel, which is lighter than water, giving them buoyancy to lift a weight of up
to 3 metric tons. Once the bag is pulled to the bottom with ballast weights, it is then
attached to the object to be recovered and its ballast is released, allowing the bag to
float to the surface with the object in tow.
